Packing for Go Sail Montenegro:
Luggage Rules and Tips
As you plan your summer getaway to the “Black Mountain,” packing smart is the key to a stress-free start. While Montenegro offers incredible value, replacing high-quality items like designer sunglasses or specific footwear can be expensive and time-consuming in coastal towns. You want to spend your time exploring the Bay of Kotor, not hunting for things you left at home!
Luggage Rules: Keep it Soft and Light!
The golden rule of sailing trips is soft-sided luggage. Hard suitcases are generally harder to move around, and allow for less space in your room. There is no specific weight limit, our boats differ depending on each category and dates. They take up valuable space and are difficult to store. Opt for duffel bags, backpacks, or foldable luggage. These are easily collapsible and can be stowed away neatly.
- Size Matters: Keep your luggage compact! Storage is tight, so please pack smaller bags that fit under your bed or in the cupboards.
- Avoid Overpacking: Spaces are limited onboard. Be ruthless with your packing! Only bring what you absolutely need.
Here is a video of our boat, Knez Lipovac, that might give you an idea of the spaces onboard:
Here is a checklist of 8 essentials for your Montenegrin adventure:
Passport and Visas: Check the requirements for Montenegro (see here).
Swimming Gear: Bikinis, board shorts, or swimmers—you’ll be living in these!
Sunglasses: We recommend polarized lenses for the bright Adriatic sun and a sport-style pair for active shore excursions.
Comfy Closed-Toe Shoes: Montenegro’s old towns like Kotor, Perast, and Budva are famous for steep, polished limestone steps. Proper sneakers are a must for hiking up to St. John’s Fortress for those iconic views!
A Fleece or Jacket: In May/June and September/October, evenings on the water can be crisp. Even in peak summer, a light windbreaker is great for breezy days at sea.
Plug Adaptor: Montenegro uses the standard European 2-pin plug (Type C/F, 220 volts).
Personal Pharmacy: Crew members cannot legally dispense painkillers. Pack your own paracetamol or ibuprofen for minor aches or headaches.
Travel Insurance: Don’t skip this. Ensure your policy covers sailing and adventure activities to protect against mishaps or losses.
Not-so-obvious items to pack or buy in Montenegro
Here are 6 items you should pack or purchase that might not spring to mind so easily:
-
Smart-Casual Clothes: Locals in Porto Montenegro and Budva dress to impress. Pack a nice linen shirt or a summer dress for dinners at the marinas.
-
Beach Towel: We provide bath towels, but you’ll need your own beach towel for sunbathing on deck and swim stops.
-
Sports Camera: A waterproof GoPro-style camera is perfect for capturing your dives into the Blue Cave.
-
Mosquito Spray: While not an epidemic, mosquitoes can be pests at certain marinas. A good repellent (like “Off!”) is a lifesaver.
-
Snorkel Kit: While we have some gear on board, bringing your own mask ensures a perfect fit for exploring Montenegro’s underwater reefs.
-
Floaties: You can find these in local markets, but bringing your own inflatable ring makes those swim stops in the Bay of Kotor even more relaxing!
Enjoy Your Montenegro Sailing Adventure!
